Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga — Complete Darshan & Stay Guide 2026
One of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, situated on a sacred island shaped like the Om (ॐ) symbol in the Narmada River, Madhya Pradesh. Plan your darshan, island parikrama, and temple stay.
About Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on a naturally formed island in the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh. The island's shape — an unmistakable Om (ॐ) — gives the place its name: Om (the sacred syllable of creation) + Ishwar (Lord Shiva) = Omkareshwar.
It is one of the 12 most sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and a major stop on the Narmada Parikrama, the 2,600 km circumambulation of the Narmada River. The temple is built in the Nagara style on Shivapuri hill on the island, facing east.
According to Hindu legend, King Mandhata (an ancestor of Lord Rama) performed intense devotion here, and the Jyotirlinga manifested in response. The island also houses the Mamleshwar temple — the second Jyotirlinga — connected to Omkareshwar by a bridge. Both are considered one complete darshan.

Why Omkareshwar is Sacred
Omkareshwar's unique island location, ancient history, and role in the Narmada Parikrama make it one of India's most spiritually significant pilgrimage destinations.
Island shaped like Om (ॐ)
The Omkareshwar island is naturally shaped like the sacred Om symbol. This unique geological formation is why the place is named Omkareshwar — Om (the sacred syllable) + Ishwar (Lord Shiva). It is the only Jyotirlinga situated on a river island.
Two Jyotirlingas on one island
Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar are both located on the same island, connected by a bridge. Pilgrims traditionally visit both, as they are considered a single Jyotirlinga manifestation. The Mamleshwar temple faces south, while Omkareshwar faces east.
Narmada Parikrama stop
Omkareshwar is a major destination on the 2,600 km Narmada Parikrama — the sacred circumambulation of the Narmada River. Devotees completing the parikrama consider darshan at Omkareshwar mandatory.
Ancient Mandhata legend
According to legend, King Mandhata (an ancestor of Lord Rama) performed intense tapas here to please Lord Shiva. The Jyotirlinga is believed to have manifested from his devotion. Ancient copper plates and temple records confirm worship here dating back over 2,000 years.
Kartik Purnima festival
Kartik Purnima (full moon in the month of Kartik, November) is the most celebrated festival at Omkareshwar. The entire island is illuminated, and thousands of pilgrims take the Narmada holy dip. Accommodation fills up months in advance.
Free ferry to the temple
Free ferry services run regularly from the mainland ghat to the Omkareshwar island. Paid ferries are also available. The 10–15 minute crossing across the Narmada is considered part of the spiritual experience.
